3.2 general patterns- You can solve these with any numbers because if the problem was p + p=2 x p. Then you can write that p could equal any number. You would then have to stick with that number that equaled p throughout the problem. So if p=3 then the problem would look like 3 + 3=2 x3. You would have to stick with the number that is given though.

3.1 patterns and variables- A pattern is a number that is used 2 or more throughout the whole problem. So in the problem The value of 6 quarters is 6/4 dollars. The pattern would be the 6. Because it is used more then once. Variables are letters that take the place of unknown numbers so in the problen n + n = 2x n. Then the variables would be the n's.

3.3 algebraic expression- An expression that contains a varaible.
